Salt Lake Plot Transfer Begin Again In Kolkata

Residents of Salt Lake can again apply for the transfer of their leasehold property. Earlier, the Calcutta High court had imposed a stay order restricting the process of transferring leasehold right which has been lifted.
Earlier, the high court had given a provisional stay on the state government's decision of charging a transfer fee of Rs 5 lakh per cottah after an application was filed by a resident of BC Block challenging the government's decision to charge Rs 5 lakh per cottah as the transfer fee. "The case has been disposed of. Mr. Debashis Sen, the state urban development sectary said that the process of transferring of leasehold rights has begun again.
According to an official, an amount of 1 crore has been received this month by the department as the transfer fee applications.
Salt Lake plots are leasehold and have been distributed to residents on a lease for 999 years. Till 2012, selling or transferring of leasehold rights was illegal since the urban development department itself used to be the owner of it was the state urban development department itself. Therefore, several hundred of plots and residential buildings were illegally sold and transferred which resulted in loss of revenues. After weighing the pros and cons, the Mamata Banerjee government finally gave legal stamp on the transfer of the leasehold plots on June 2012 against a fee of Rs 5 lakh for each cottah of the leasehold rights.
In the earlier stages of the township, two types of leasehold plots were allotted to the residents. While most of the residents were distributed the plots under Clause 20, about 88 individuals, who were among the first 100 residents to get the plots in the township in the early 70s, were distributed.
